Forbes Trail runs through the Laurel Highlands in Western Pennsylvania and dates back to the French and Indian war where it came to Ligonier. A fort was built at this location by the British in preparation for an upcoming attack on the French Fort Duquesne located at what is now Pittsburgh. My wife Kriss and I often escape to the Laurel Highlands in the summer to a small private campground owned by our friends the Kinseys. The campfire always seems to be burning and somehow large, elaborate flower arrangements make their appearance on the rustic picnic table beneath a large canopy of trees. This small arrangement of wild flowers was "thrown" together by Marian Kinsey and I found it to be very interesting......these same types of flowers were most certainly viewed along Forbes Trail by our ancestors who were preparing for battle.
An interesting side note...General Forbes, whose responsibility it was to take Fort Duquesne was gravely ill at this point in the campaign and depended heavily upon his chief subordinate for execution of his plans. His name.....Colonel Henry Bouquet.
