I found these 'guys' hanging-out together on a rail in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, a small town about thirty miles east of Pittsburgh that is just loaded with history from the days of the French and Indian Wars. However, the reason for doing this painting had nothing to do with that particular conflict but the memory I have as a small boy growing up in Mount Hope, West Virginia and a certain pool hall that usually had several old men, hanging around outside, leaning against a pipe rail, discussing the events of the day, each one different in character and dress, but they all seemed the same to me as a kid.
